I have two boys, ages nine and four. My four year old, is the one with all the food allergies. However it is my nine year old, that has been the one breaking out in mysterious hives. I can’t figure out the trigger and it’s driving me close to crazy (if I wasn’t already there).
He’s had four reactions in the last month. Each reaction happened after coming home from school and while he was in the living room. He was not eating anything prior to the breakouts. The windows were not open in the house. We do not have any pets. The first two times both boys were wrestling on the floor (it’s carpeted). The last two times they were sitting next to each other on the couch watching TV.
I feel like an investigator or something…maybe the game of clue? In the living room, with Mr. Plum..
Anyone have any idea’s??

I would guess that it is either pollen or mold spores from the carpeting coming in contact with his skin.

I would say AJ needs to be tested for allergies. From what I know they can develop at any time and to any severity. And his breakout seems a clear sign of that. It could be that nothing is new but his allergies themselves.
It sounds like you have some information to take to an allergist assuming that you do. Does AJ breakout if he is with his brother in another room or in the living room alone that you know of? Something could be spilled on the carpet or furniture that needs to be professionally cleaned, Does Ryan use a lotion or another product that AJ doesn't, if so bring them to the allergist appt . Write down all you know and bring it in to the doctor. It could be as simple but troublesome as dust mites. If you have given him Zyrtec or other medicine and that helps then you must tell the Dr. that too. But he will need not to be on any medicine a while before testing or it could mess up the results, ask them when you make the appt. Hopefully it turns out to be something totally avoidable. -Debra (another mother of a child with food allergies)

My son and I have both had issues with eczema and hives. When we encased all of our bedding (mattresses, boxsprings, pillows, comforters) with dustmite encasements and got rid of wall-to-wall carpeting, the skin issues cleared up. Good luck. Allergies are so confounding. -Erin (mom of two kids with anaphylactic food allergies and serious environmental allergies)

Wow! You all have some great ideas. Thank you for sharing them with me. I think I'm going to do a deep clean of the living room and his bedroom. I just recently washed the carpet in the living room so I really don't think it's that. We have leather couches so it's not that. My throw pillows are a good possibility, they've been around for a while and probably are not the cleanest things around. I wonder if I should test the pillows on AJ? Come to think of it…he also has a throw pillow in his bedroom that have been around a while too. Those things are so hard to clean if there's no cover on them!!! He recently had two smaller episodes of hives at night on his face. I wonder…
