For those of you that are not familiar with our EoE journey you can read up on all of the stories and details here.
The last time I posted about our son’s EoE (Eosinophilic Esophagitis) was when we received the latest results of his endoscopy which showed decreased eosinophils. We decided then to take him off of the
steroids and to take the four additional foods out of his diet and perform another endoscopy in January in hopes that the new diet would show similar results. Unfortunately our son started showing symptoms of EoE prior to January. He started coughing up food frequently and eventually stopped eating solid foods again.
I knew this was a possibility. I was hoping for the best but I have read enough about this disease to know that most times it just isn’t that easy. Although it was frustrating to be going down that road yet again at least this time I was prepared. I knew what to do. There was no stress and anxiety to get him to eat like there was last time. Which is such a relief for the both of us. I offered him his shakes to get enough protein, fat, calories and nutrients in him and then called the doctor.
After discussing our son’s symptoms we decided to postpone his next endoscopy and contact his allergist to determine what food should be tried next. He was already avoiding dairy, soy, egg, peanut, tree nut, green pea, and all legumes. We also took out banana, carrot, garlic, and barley due to his EoE. Next on the list is pork. We can do this. If we can do all of his other allergens, we can do pork too.
The game plan now is to wait for all of his symptoms to go away and take him off of the steroids again. Then we wait. We wait and we watch. If symptoms reappear (it took 3 weeks previously), then we put him back on the steroids and take out another food (probably wheat). If symptoms do not reappear, then we have found the trigger. We continue to do this until he is symptom free.
We can do this.
We CAN do this.
We CAN and we will stay positive doing it!

This is a difficult disorder to manage since it originates from the blood. And since the body cannot stop producing eosinophilic, it would take a lot of trials with medications before the child finally finds a medication that would pacify the symptoms. Even people with allergies find themselves in a daily struggle, order and take nasonex in a consistent basis or take nasal sprays. With the advancement of technology, hope something will come up that will make a child with EoE better.

Richard,
I'm a strong believer that I will find the food trigger that is causing my son's EoE symptoms. I'm determined. We are on our last packet of budesinide steroids and then we wait to see if the latest diet restriction causes a decrease in symptoms and eosinophils. Fingers crossed!!
Thanks for the comment. I always appreciate a discussion from someone educated in the disease.
Take care,
Beth

Apart from that, there are also studies that states that steroids causes different kinds of neurogenic and psychological disorders and to men, it could cause erectile dysfunction. Good thing for you Beth, you were very vigilant in making this work and trying your best to help out your child, ans since you detected as early as it started will help your son be cured the soonest. Don't worry, I know he will be better soon.
