In 2008 the Department of Human Health and Services – Center for Disease Control and Prevention released the following statistics:
- In 2007, approximately 3 million children under the age of 18 years were reported to have a food or digestive allergic reaction in the previous 12 months.
- The prevalence of food allergies increased 18% among children under the age of 18 years between 1997 and 2007.
- From 2004 to 2006, there were approximately 9,500 hospital discharges per year with a diagnosis related to food allergy among children under the age of 18 years.
- Four out of every 100 children have a food allergy.
