Best Way to Store Fresh Produce

February 1, 2012 by Elizabeth DiBurro Leave a Comment

Store Fresh Produce to Last

Because of our son’s food allergies his diet is based largely on fruits and vegetables.  Our family goes through a large amount of fresh produce every week.  Nothing bothers me more than finding a container of forgotten moldy blueberries tucked away in a drawer.  Or I would buy items like avocados on shopping day with the intention of using it later that week for dinner, only to find out it had become a big mushy mess.  The waste of food, money and lack of ingredients needed for a recipe frustrated me enough to do a little research.

I created a list of foods and the best method of storing them.  I taped this list on the inside of one of my kitchen cabinets.  I also have a huge wipe board in my kitchen.  One of the items I list on the board each week is of all the fresh produce I purchased at the store.  This has been proven to be very useful in my house.  Snack time, twice a day for both boys must always contain at least one serving of fruit.  It’s easy for them to know what we have without standing at the refrigerator with the door wide open and saying “Mom, there’s nothing to eat”.

I have attached the lists below.  Feel free to print them out.

Enjoy!
