Veta™: The New EpiPen® Smart Case

November 21, 2015 by Elizabeth DiBurro 1 Comment

Giving your child more independence is never easy, especially for parents whose children have food allergies.  It is our job as their parents to educate them about the importance of protecting themselves from anaphylaxis and what to do in the event of an allergic reaction.  We hope that when the time comes, they’ll have all the tools necessary to make the right choices.  That is a lot to ask of anyone, especially a teen.  Veta™ has the ability to assist your teen, spouse, parent, babysitter, anyone in helping make those life-threatening choices easier all while alerting you in the process.
Veta™ is a new EpiPen® smart case that syncs to you and your child's mobile device alerting you when it is forgotten, opened, or close to expiration, which helps to instill good habits and ease of mind.

Continue reading to find out why Veta™ made me cry the first time I saw it work.

What is Veta™??

Veta™ is a smart case specifically designed to hold an EpiPen®.  It contains technology that syncs to you and your child’s iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch® or Android™ mobile devices using Bluetooth® Smart.

What does Veta™ do?

Veta™ holds your child’s EpiPen® and syncs to mobiles devices to alert you of the following actions:

  • Separation Alert: How far is too far?  You choose how close your child’s smart case should ALWAYS be to their phone.  If at any time your child’s phone travels outside of that distance from their Veta™, you can receive an alert on your phone and so can your child.
  • Auto-Injector Removal Alert: When the auto-injector is removed from the smart case, Veta™ broadcasts an alert and your child’s location information to your mobile device.
  • Temperature Monitor: Temperature sensors monitor your child’s EpiPen® and alerts you and your child’s phone if Veta™ smart case reaches temperatures above or below the limits you set.
  • Find Me:  Veta™ has a flashing light and audio ping that alerts you when trying to find a lost case.
  • Expiry Reminder : Veta™ tracks the expiration date of your EpiPen® auto-injector and sends friendly reminders when it is time to refill your prescription.

Why did Veta™ make me cry?

As an allergy parent I carry a lot of anxiety.  I am scared about the people around my son knowing how to react to an allergic reaction and I worry about my child forgetting his EpiPen® or remembering how to inject the epinephrine.  As he ages that fear and anxiety is increasing largely in part because it is becoming more of his responsibility.  One of the best features of  Veta™,other than the separation reminder, is the on-screen visual that shows on your child’s phone screen when the smart case is opened.  I WISH I had a picture of it!  This screen, which automatically pops up, contains a one-button push to dial 911 and an epinephrine administration video.  Not only will this be very useful in an emergency, but it also is a fantastic teaching aid.  Love this!!!

What didn’t I like about Veta™?

  • The size.  The smart case definitely increases the amount of space needed to easily carry your epinephrine.  However, I would GLADLY make accommodations for the increased size for ease of mind and technological features that Veta™

    offer.

  • One device works on only one EpiPen®.  I’m sure that making a case that carries two auto-injectors would be too bulky.  I get that.  However, I wish all of information, videos, and photos would should TWO EpiPens®; one in the Veta™ smart case and one in the standard EpiPen® case being carried together.  You all remember my story about why we need two EpiPens®, right?

How do I purchase a Veta™ EpiPen smart case?

Visit Veta™ Smart Case for EpiPen® for information on how to order.

Glad to see advancements in this area for sure. Though you won't have to worry where that EpiPen is if you can ALWAYS wear it. See PortaPocket… it can help save a life.
